Begin again

It started as an idea in the car, thinking about a new project. Like many creative folks, I have ideas all of the time. 99% of them never see the light of day. This one felt different. I recorded the idea on my phone because it seemed like a moment I’d look back on. I had decided to make a design podcast. A podcast, I know. There are so many, most of them garbage. A few of them great.

But I wanted to make the type of podcast I wanted to listen to. About the design process, a raw look at getting shit done with a little beard stroking thrown in. I’d interview creative people. Some well known, most not. Real people in the design industry with a focus on the nitty gritty, nults & bolts design craft. The type of content you don’t normally read or hear about. We’d talk craft, passion, design issues from Chicago, the city I design in.

So I had decided to do it. To begin. But I should back up. My name is Noel Childs. I’m an Experience Design Director and for 25 years I’ve worked on digital projects for big companies and small niche brands. I’ve worked on website and app design, retail experiences, digital ecosystems. So many different projects. I’ve had a good run. I love designing. And I find myself in a moment in time where I’m looking at my career and thinking about what’s next.

The first season I’d focus on getting the podcast up and running. Working out the kinks. every other week I’d bring a behind the scenes look at designing…wait for it…a design podcast. But first off, I felt that I needed a better mic. And I needed a name.

Then it went nowhere. Well, almost nowhere. I talked to some folks about equipment. I recorded an early conversation with people from work about coming up with a name. A humble beginning, but a beginning nonetheless. I was hesitating, because, well it felt messy, unprofessional, and thin. And yet, that feeling of unknowing vulnerability was exactly the energy I wanted to tap into. So I’ve decided to move forward. And I have a name which I’ll share in the coming weeks. But I still need a better mic.

More in the coming weeks.
